The city’s crime rate has fallen significantly in recent decades, thanks to aggressive local policies.
The city has seen great advancement in public transportation, with more than 500,000 residents and visitors using its Metro train system each day. The city also boasts a public bike-share program.
New facilities and landmarks include the España Library and a cultural center in Moravia.
The Metro system reduces Medellin’s CO2 emissions by 175,000 tons each year.
In 2011 Medellin opened a large outdoor escalator, allowing residents of the city’s elevated Comuna 13 neighborhood to safely ride down the steep hillside, the size of a 28-story building.
The city’s public utilities company, Empresas Publicas de Medellin, have helped to support community goals and public goals, such as improving education.
